2010 Fall Ratings are scheduled for Saturday November 6 - test site has not yet been determined.

Prep Guides for Fall Ratings are due in to the Education Coordinator no later than October 2.

To get a prep guide, contact Mrs. Jane Lenning at jane.lenning@knology.net

Procedure for Attempting a Rating Exam:
1. Together with your parent, you must ask permission from the D.C. to go for your rating.
2. The D.C. or rating coordinator will arrange for examiners and set up the rating session for the candidates. The ratings coordinator will notify you of times and schedules.

Requirements:
1. You must be a member in good standing with HPC plus have an attendance of 60%.
2. Pony clubbers may share mounts for D-1 to D-3 ratings only. C-1 and C-2 mounts may not be shared for a full testing at the same rating. Also an exchange of mounts is not permitted.
3. At no time may a rating be considered a "mock" rating or "for practice".

Tips:

1. Preparation begins well in advance
2. Know the Standards of Proficiency for the specific rating level you are attempting. The Standards are completely spelled out in a document called the "Standards of Proficiency" . See the National Pony Club website (www.ponyclub.org) and click on "D Standards of Proficiency" or "C Standards of Proficiency" if you do not already have copies of the Standards. The Standards describe both the mounted and unmounted skills (what US Pony Clubs, Inc. calls horse management) that the candidate is expected to demonstrate on the day of the rating. To find the horse management info listed in the standards, study the appropriate sections of the 'D' or 'C' manuals .
3. Bring necessary equipment/materials as required by your rating.
4. Turnout (grooming, cleaning of tack, preparation and presentation of the mount) is expected to be executed by the pony clubber, not a parent or groom
4. Bring a safe, sound, and appropriately schooled mount. If uncertain, speak to the D.C.
5. Get a good night's sleep the night before so you can do your best.

Please remember that ratings take time and energy to schedule. Be respectful and cooperative with organizers and examiners.

New Members:
1. Young inexperienced members begin "unrated" and may take a D-1 rating exam as ready.
2. An older, more experienced rider may be capable of passing several rating levels at a time at the first testing. However, USPC strongly advises that the first rating should not exceed D-3 because the candidate needs to gain Pony Club experience before moving on. HPC has adopted this policy
3. Once the first rating has been completed, a Pony Club member may take only one rating at a time.

Riding Examinations - Approximate Duration
D-1 approximately 2 hours
D-2 approximately 2 hours
D-3 approximately 3 - 5 hours (Bring a snack)
C-1 approximately 5 - 7 hours (Bring a snack)
C-2 approximately 7 - 8 hours (Bring a snack)

HUNTSVILLE PONY CLUB RATINGS

Revised 01-20-2008

Huntsville Pony Club ratings are administered as follows.   If a Pony Clubber wishes to uprank, then she/he must follow the procedure listed below – no exceptions.  All steps must be done in order and no step may be skipped.

 D1 THROUGH C2 RATING

1.  To uprank, a Pony Clubber must be a member in good standing.  This means that she/he must have attended at least 60% of all mounted and unmounted meetings.

2.  The Pony Clubber must pay $40 for a ratings kit.  No $40, no kit.  The $40 is nonrefundable and nontransferable.  In other words, if a Pony Clubber signs up for fall ratings and then decides to wait until spring to uprank, then she/he will need to ante up another $40 in the spring.  A Pony Clubber may choose to pay $40 in the spring and schedule to be rated in the fall – she/he must let the Ratings Coordinator know when to schedule the ratings.  The Ratings Coordinator collects the $40.  In the case where a Pony Clubber is taking both their D1 and D2 rating examinations at the same time, the fee is $65.  In the case where a Pony Clubber is taking their D1, D2, and D3 rating examinations at the same time, the fee is $90.

3.  Once the ratings fee has been received, the Pony Clubber will be issued the appropriate ratings kit by the Ratings Coordinator.  The ratings kit is made up of:

                            a)     An Instruction Sheet

                            b)     A Ratings Consent Form

                           c)    A Prep Guide (a different one for each rating level)

4.  The Ratings Coordinator, with the approval of the District Commissioner, will select and line up rating examiners for all requested ratings.

5.  It is highly recommended that a Pony Clubber get a mentor (more experienced Pony Clubber) to help in preparing for the rating.

6.  The Pony Clubber will complete the Prep Guide contained in the ratings kit.  The Prep Guide asks for the same information listed on the Rating Standard used by the examiner.

7.  The Pony Clubber will complete the Ratings Consent form.  It has three (3) sections and requires three (3) signatures:

a) Parent’s Consent / Release (must be signed by parent of Pony Clubber).

b) Riding Instructor’s Release (this must be signed by the Pony Clubber’s riding instructor or instructors indicating that the Pony Clubber has sufficient riding ability to attempt the rating).

c)  Huntsville Pony Club Release (must be signed either by an education coordinator, the D.C., or a joint-D.C. to indicate that the Pony Clubber has correctly completed the appropriate level Prep Guide.  This portion of the ratings consent form will only be signed after the Prep Guide is reviewed).

 8.    The Ratings Consent form and the Prep Guide are turned in together to the appropriate education coordinator.  This must be done no less than 4 weeks before the day of the rating.  If the Rating Consent form and the Prep Guide are turned in less than 4 weeks before the rating date, the Pony Clubber will be removed from the ratings schedule and the $40 forfeited – no exceptions.

 9.    The Pony Clubber is to study the Prep Guide when the education coordinator returns it (2 to 3 weeks prior to the rating).  The Pony Clubber now has at least 2 weeks to become familiar with the information in the guide. This is the information on which the Pony Clubber will be tested.

 10.  The Pony Clubber will take her/his rating examination.  If the Pony Clubber fails to meet standards as specified on the ratings test, she/he has 30 days from the original rating date to demonstrate compliance with the standard.  The Pony Clubber must work out with the ratings examiner the provisions for demonstrating compliance to standards.

3.  To get an application form for any of the upper level ratings, go to the USPC website (www.ponyclub.org) or the MidSouth web site (www.midsouthponyclub.org) and click on the ‘FORMS’ button. Go down to the “T” section of the forms and select the “Testing – Candidate Application HB and Up” form.  The ratings application is the same for all upper level ratings. All applications must be completed and postmarked by January 15th or April 15th (depending on test date).

4.  The ratings applicant must complete the application and get the HPC District Commissioner to sign the application recommending the rating.

5.  The USPC cost schedule for each rating is listed on the application form:

C-3DR      $175               C-3SJ          $175

B               $200               B-DR          $200

A-DR        $225               A-SJ             $225

The deposit must be paid with an HPC check.  The Pony Clubber must turn in to the HPC District Commissioner the rating deposit and the completed application form.  The Huntsville Pony Club cannot prepare the club check until it has received the appropriate payment from the Pony Clubber.  Huntsville Pony Club will mail the completed and approved application form along with a Huntsville Pony Club check to the USPC national office.

 6.   The total cost of the various ratings ranges from $150 to $310, depending on where the rating is held and how many other Pony Clubbers are in the rating pool.  The Pony Clubber’s family is responsible for the entire rating cost.

 7.   USPC national requires all rating cancellations to be in writing.  If a Pony Clubber cancels her/his ratings application more than 8 weeks before the test date, all but $25 of the deposit will be returned.  If a Pony Clubber cancels her/his ratings application less than 8 weeks before the posted test date, the entire deposit is forfeited.  If the cost of the rating is less than specified deposit, national will reimburse the Pony Clubber the difference between the deposit and the actual rating cost.

For each upper level rating taken, Huntsville Pony Club will pay for one half of the entire rating fee on a one-time basis.  This reimbursement will occur only after the Pony Clubber takes the rating examination.
